Made to measure dresses

I'm always so flattered when someone gets in touch looking for help to design and make an outfit  for their special occasion. Luckily most come with an exact idea of what they want, but the exciting, if time consuming ones are the designs that start as a patchwork of ideas. I'm not the best artist in the world, but I do enjoy those drawings that start out as a pencil skirt and finish as a catsuit.

Fulera Seidu, President of ACNAG: (ATAG Craft Network Association of Ghana ) was selected out of 1000s of craft workers in Ghana to represent her country at the 2014 Olympics in Brazil at the cultural market.

It was a massive honour for me to be asked to design and make 2 casual tops that would scream Ghana ! and would allow her to show off her Ebony wood, bone and glass bead jewelry.

As you can see Fulera was a success in her red, gold and green elasticated tops. one had a large circular single flouncy sleave and the other a boob tube. When Fulera returned she said I had missed a trick, she could have sold the tops 100s of times over.2020  Tokyo we will be coming prepared.

Akua the Creator of The British Blacklist  is one of the hardest working people I know and definitely deserves to be always going to awards ceremonies and hob nobbing with the stars.

Making the dress she wore for the Back 2 Black awards awards was a real pleasure, she like so many people today like a fitted dress but don't want the discomfort of boning. So I have to be a little creative to cut and sew to show off her curves, without the dress being too tight.

I also had to weight the tail of the dress so that it would maintain the flair as she walked. We had a little practice of how to elegantly pick up the tail and walk up the stairs.
As you can see from the photos. this was not necessary. Akua looked amazing and wore her dress well, with pose and elegance.

Akua's lovely daugther came to see me about having a very special prom dress for the end of term. It took a while to come up with the design, but finally after trying on a few styles and looking through 100s of pictures on pinterest, we put together all the elements that she liked and came up with this classic and classy plaited sweetheart fitted bodice with a flowing maxi skirt and a wide sash that ties to the side.

we don't often get a flowing African print, but there are plenty poly cotton African prints on the market that will give you the vibrant colour and a weighted flow.

Mum's can go to the prom too nowadays, so Akua made a few changes to my wrap dress design and we came up with this stunning new design. The ladies told me later that  they had a lovely time and they received plenty of compliments on their dresses.

Many people I've spoken to ended up making life altering decisions. 3 families I know have left the UK for greener climes and another 4 are leaving the big cities for greener spaces where the pace of life is slower and their vistas wider. Normally I am a special occasions seamstress, but not anymore. As the months indoors wore on and everyone started gardening, home schooling and working via zoom I was asked for not just informal wear, but comfortable to absorb and disguise the new spreading waist line while  reflecting the clients own tastes and long buried under work clothes desires. No one cares about what was in the magazines anymore or the season's colours. What I was being asked for was classic lines, flattering lengths and disguised roominess. The 50's and

Fulani Jewelry wholesale & retail

I started selling Fulani jewelry in the early 1990s. I bought my first stock from Ghanaian and Malian glass bead traders I would meet at the Ghana Trade Fair center. I was fascinated by the intricate work and the bright shine of the brass. I had sold brass and silver jewelry from India and Thailand since the late 80s but had never come across any other people who worked brass that thin or that shiny. My customers were equally as fascinated. It would be more than 10 years I would go to Mali and meet Malian Fulani brass jewelry makers for myself.  The origins of the distinctive earring designs is shrouded in a bit of mystery and many stories. The one that rings true to me is that 1000s of years ago the Fulani peoples left the areas of modern day Senegal and became nomadic. They followed their cattle and traded from the Western coast of Africa all the way up towrds he North, some even going as far up as Egypt. Along the way they would trade with the other peoples they incountered.

Awards Ceremony Dressing, When you need to be #gettyimages ready

Congratulations to @cherrelleskeete for her award of best supporting actress at @thebbtas The Black British Theatre Awards. Her partner @shilohcoke had  this beautiful velvet tailored jacket that needed some alterations. It was a little too big and boxy. I shaped and contoured it flatter her curves. A very famous online fashion brand sent her trousers that were 2 sizes too large which i made alterations too as well.I love how the outfits complimented each other. I always enjoy sewing for Cherelle  Skeete. She has a unique style and  Really loves halter necks. This is the second one I have made for her. Cherelle was torn between 2 ideas. In the end we went for the halterneck top part with wide leg bottom creating this super fabulous jumpsuit. The fabric was a lovely bold green and black print with pink stripes but i didn't want to have the stripes all the way through the outfit so i cut them out of the top part and added an extra stripe on each leg. I really love the new pattern t
